Kenya Railways has provided a SMS-based code that allows paying for tickets on the Madaraka express.

Customers can book, pay and cancel tickets for the Madaraka Express train that connects Mombasa and Nairobi by dialing *639#. It also makes brief stops at Voi and Mitto Andei. The SMS-based solution also supports MPESA payments.

According to Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina, customers can buy up to five tickets a week in advance. Main said that this way the country’s national railway corporation combats ticket sales by middlemen.

After booking their tickets, customers will receive SMS confirmations with information concerning their destination, time and date of departure and the number of passengers.
